This article demonstrates converting a text message to audio using the Google Text-to-Speech app and then forwarding it to a friend/colleague on Slack.
Prerequisites
- A Quickwork account and and familiarity with the platform's GUI.
Step-by-step guide
Configuring the trigger
- Under the Event section, choose the Scheduler by Quickwork app from the drop-down menu in the Apps list present right below the New Trigger button.
- Select the trigger event, New scheduled event, from the drop-down menu in the Triggers list.
- Set the Interval as per your choice based on how often you want to run the journey.
- Set the date and time of your choice in the Start at field and keep the Custom payload field empty.
Configuring Google Text-to-Speech action
- Under the Steps section, click on the Simple Action button and then choose the Google Text-to-Speech app from the drop-down menu in the Apps list.
- Select the Text synthesize action from the drop-down menu in the Actions list.
- Click on Link an account to connect your Google account. If you have already connected, select an existing account.
- Upon successful connection establishment, input fields will open up for you.
- In the Text input field, specify the text that you want to get converted into audio. For example, Hello, how are you?
- Select the audio language of your choice from the Language drop-down menu.
- Similarly, select the Gender of the voice.
Configuring Slack action
- Click the + icon, click Simple Action, and then select Slack app from the drop-down menu in the Apps field.
- Select the Send message to a user action from the drop-down menu in the Actions field.
- Click on Link an account to authorize your Slack account or select an existing connection.
- Upon successful connection establishment, input fields will open up for you.
- In the Username input field, select the name of a user to whom you want to send the voice message.
- For the Message field, use the Url data pill from the Data Tree Output of the Google Text-to-Speech | Text synthesize action.
- Set Send the message as a user or a bot? to Yes to send the message on your behalf instead of as a bot. If left empty, no message will be sent.
Executing the journey
- Save the journey by clicking the Save & Start button.
- Open your Slack account and navigate to the chat window of the user specified in the Slack action.
- The audio file (.mp3) will appear as a message.
4. Open the file in a browser tab to listen to the audio of your text message.
Your text has been successfully converted to audio and sent to your selected Slack user as a voice message.
