This article demonstrates how to create a custom text template and apply for its approval in WhatsApp by Gupshup.
What you'll need:
Skill level: Intermediate
Time required: 5 minutes
- WhatsApp by Gupshup account with a live app (not sandbox app)
- Understanding of what category and type of template you want to create with associated parameters
What is a template?
A static message featuring a text, video, document, or location with associated dynamic parameters is called a template. Look at the following text template image:
The template has a static message with a parameter with an integer enclosed in the curly brackets e.g., {{1}}. If the template message has more parameters, it is stated as {{1}}, {{2}}, {{3}}, and so on.
The parameter is a user-defined value. It could be an integer or a string as per the sense of the template message. Look at the Example in the template image. The term [John] is a user-defined parameter that completes the sense of the template message. The term is enclosed in box brackets for our understanding. Once the journey is configured in Quickwork, a clean text message (with no brackets and special characters) gets sent on WhatsApp. Refer to the following screenshot:
How to create a template?
- Log in to your WhatsApp by Gupshup account and select the live app in which you want to create a template:
- In the Advanced Settings page of the app, scroll down to the Test access API and set callback URL section and click the View templates button:
- This will take you to the Template List window in the new tab. This window contains a list of all templates that can be sent on WhatsApp:
- To create a new template, click the + Add more button. The Add Template window will open. It is a form-like page in which you have to fill the details related to the template you want to create:
-
- Template Labels: Select the use-case that the template serves. E.g., Account update.
- Template Category: Select the category the templates falls into. E.g., ACCOUNT_UPDATE.
- Template Type: Select the type of the template as TEXT.
- Template Language: Select English.
- Element name: This is the name of the template. The template name must be in the lowercase alphanumeric characters with underscores. E.g., registration_update.
- Template Format: Here, you have to define the static message of the template with the number of associated parameters in curly brackets. E.g., Hi {{1}}, you have successfully registered on Quickwork.
- Add interactive actions: This section allows you to add buttons beneath the text message. It could be Call to Actions clicking which the user redirects to a URL or Quick replies clicking which the user gets more information in the chat itself. Select None as we are creating a simple text template.
- Sample message: Here, specify the example message with a user-defined parameter that will be sent on WhatsApp. E.g., Hi [John], you have successfully registered on Quickwork. Ensure you specify the parameter within box brackets.
-
- Now, click the Preview and Submit button. A dialog box will appear giving you a preview of how your template looks:
- Click the Submit button. Facebook will review your requested template and approve it if it meets all their terms and conditions. You can then view your template in the Template List window.
